TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN

Some of the most maternal women would commit hari-kari before travelling with young children.  Once done, never forgotten.  The embarrassment of those long haul flights as your once cute child pukes, screams and whinges its way across the continent, driving all the passengers, yourself included, to drink.  But with some careful pre-planning - unless your child is a complete monster - it needn't always be like this.

Boredom is your - and their - greatest enemy.  Bring some new toys with you and ones that take a long time to figure out.  Crayons and a plentiful supply of paper are vital.  And don't forget your child's favourite toy - getting them to sleep in a strange bedroom without Teddy is no joke.

Organisation is the name of the game when it comes to anyone under 12 years. Accept that you'll have to leave some of your glitzier numbers at home for the sake of bringing not only the children's clothes but dolls too.  Extra nappies, a large box of tissues or wipes, extra made up drinks (which you'll probably need too!) should be part and parcel of your luggage.  And you simply can't leave home without a very high protection suncream... and a sun hat.

Children (just like adults) can suffer from ear trouble in planes so don't forget the sweets.  A plastic sheet is a must when you're holidaying with the little people.  Rather than suffer the agonies of wet hotel sheets, why not save yourself.

Most resorts now are aware of the needs of children and provide a variety of sports and diversions to keep them amused.

So relax.  If you do, the kid will too... fingers crossed.  Have fun!
