Ljubljana is a smaller Prague without the hordes of tourists. By far Slovenia's largest and most populous city, this charming place feels like a clean, green, self-contented town rather than an industrious municipality of national importance.

LJUBLJANA

When To Go
There is no bad time to visit Ljubljana. June to September is the peak season for tourists, when al fresco living is easy and temperatures oscillate between warm and pleasant and hot and humid. Conversely, lots of visitors means it's harder to get a room and restaurant tables are tough to get without a booking. Autumn is an ideal time to visit: still-warm days are coloured by falling leaves and the whole city has a gorgeous glow about it - not to mention the falling prices of hotel rooms. Winter is extremely cold, with snow making a regular appearance, but crisp, blue days are easily enjoyed if you're wrapped up - and the ski slopes are just a short drive away. December is festive time, with the whole city awash with decorations and mulled-wine-fuelled celebration.
